Charlie Roarick - Drums and Vocals

I grew up in Burlington, NC, took piano lessons and sang in the church choir as a kid. A few years later, I picked up bass guitar, and then discovered just how exciting is to play the drums. I learned many fundamentals on my own, and later, took lessons at Community Music, a branch of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem.

After a few beginner rock bands, and a couple of years of playing, I went on a tour of western Canada with country singer Sue Hiatt from Greensboro.

In the 80’s I joined Harold Hill and the Frontier Band, a well-established traditional country band based out of Charlotte. Almost immediately, we recorded an EP’s worth of material to sell at our shows, produced and engineered by Mark Williams at Reflections. The next year we released “Even When I Ride in the Rain,” an album recorded at HMC, also in Charlotte. The third single “Dreaming Separate Dreams” was listed as a Recommended Pick in Billboard magazine. The Frontier Band’s exciting live shows featured a mix of originals and covers.

I joined an exciting rock and roll group called the “Heebie Jeebies” out of Greensboro. We didn’t play out much but we recorded a lot, and I became experienced in overdubbing timbale and other percussion parts onto basic tracks. I sang up to a quarter of the lead vocals with this group.

I moved to Minneapolis and worked for two years with a part-time variety band called “Sugartree.” The funny thing about that was that I never practiced with them; the three of them had been together for almost 20 years, and whenever they threw a new song at me it was usually live, with no prior discussion. It was a blast, and we played rock and country and blended it to suit the room.

When I arrived in Raleigh I became involved with the music programs at Providence Baptist Church, replacing the previous orchestral and contemporary drummers when they both left in the same month. I was in their ambitious Christmas program later that year.

Currently, I’m with the 86 Proof Band. We all have a lot of fun playing country, rock and R&B. Check out our video of “Simple Man” recorded at the Longbranch in May 2008:

My strong points are: diverse repertoire, intuitive playing, strong sense of meter and playing with a feel that is appropriate for the song. I play Yamaha drums with Zildjian and Sabian cymbals, and sometimes add timbales to the kit.
